| Massage for Seniors | |
So
often seniors are forgotten in the hustle and bustle of our busy American
lifestyles. Isolation and loneliness are common friends to
many seniors. Research shows that social connection is a key component
to health and happiness for everyone, especially seniors. As we age, our physical bodies begin the normal process of gradual deterioration. Our circulation diminishes. We lose our ability to effectively detoxify our bodies through the lymphatic system due to inactivity or diminished ability to exercise vigorously. Joints begin to be arthritic and we have decreased range of motion. Our hearing or eyesight becomes less than normal. Disease begins to show up. All of these events can greatly affect the quality of life of the senior.
Even though our bodies begin to decline with age, our emotional/mental/spiritual
needs can remain the same if not more important. Many seniors feel very
alive inside and have a great deal to contribute to their families, friends
and communities.Nurturing touch therapies can support seniors in improving and maintaining health and well-being. Massage increases the circulation, improving lymphatic flow and allowing the body to detoxify. Regular caring touch can profoundly impact not only physical health but also emotional/mental and spiritual well-being. Seniors, regardless of the setting they live in or the healing goals they have set for themselves, experience many of the benefits that massage therapy provides. Active healthy seniors will benefit in maintaining their health and connections in life. Seniors with illness and disability may experience less pain, sleep better, experience more joy in their lives and feel more connected to the world they live in. Massage is especially helpful for seniors who reside in a nursing care facility, have health imbalances and perhaps a great need to be touched.
